2020 Mercedes-Benz C 300 Sedan Review, Specs, Price

Gateway models sometime fall well short of their more expensive counterparts in a luxury automaker's lineup, but that isn't the case with the C-class. This relatively affordable Benz bears pleasing similarities to the storied S-class, and it delivers this goodness at a reasonable price. Its cabin is chic and opulent, and its handling is crisp and engaging. Sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles are offered. The C300 is no slouch in the fun department, but those seeking a little extra kick will want to investigate the AMG variants, which step things up significantly when it comes to performance. We review those models, the C43 and C63, separately.

What's New for 2020? For the 2020 model year, the Mercedes-Benz C-class adds blind-spot monitoring as standard equipment on all models. Pricing and Which One to Buy: C300 sedan $42,395. C300 coupe $46,945. C300 cabriolet $54,945.

We imagine that the sedan body style will be the practical choice for most C-class buyers. It comes standard with appealing exterior features such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic LED headlights, and heated power-adjustable side-view mirrors with auto-dimming and power-folding capability. Within the cabin, there is Bluetooth connectivity, power-adjustable front seats with memory settings, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, and keyless entry and ignition.

Some might criticize the 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class for looking an awful lot like its E-Class and S-Class stablemates. Not us. Coupes, convertibles, and far more common sedans share a front end that makes the big three-pointed star the literal star of the show. Don’t look for a hood ornament as Mercedes is, sadly, moving away from its iconic shape.

From the side, sedans and coupes share a high-greenhouse silhouette that works well. Subtle chrome details add bucks-up appeal. From the rear, the C-Class is at its best, though two-doors and four-doors have different taillight designs.

Optional AMG styling kits for the C300 are included on the C43 and C63, and they run just the right side of ostentatious with gaping lower intakes, rear diffusers, and side skirts. A wide range of wheel choices helps ensure that no two Cs need look the same, though dealers are likely to stock nearly identical cars.

Inside, the C-Class again channels its big brothers with a curvy dash that can be draped in a variety of veneers. Don’t be afraid to venture out from glossy wood to open pore ash or aluminum, which are no-cost options depending on the features you’ve selected.

The wide 10.3-inch touchscreen that hovers above the dash doesn’t look like an afterthought here as it does in some cars, though it doesn’t integrate with the available digital instrument cluster as nicely in the C-Class as it does in other Benzes.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo. The look and feel of the C-class cabin is appropriately ritzy, and its design is similar to that of its costlier sibling, the S-class. This is a good thing. In front, a touchscreen hovers above a sleek center stack that hosts three circular air vents. The switchgear feels weighty and substantial, and opting for the available leather upholstery and wood interior accents takes the cabin even further uptown. Sedans offer 13 cubic feet of trunk space. That figure is on par with the Audi A4's cargo capacity, but it's a lot less than you'll get with the BMW 3-series, which delivers a whopping 17 cubic feet.

Infotainment and Connectivity. Mercedes-Benz equips the base-model C-class with infotainment amenities such as a 7.0-inch central display screen, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration. Dual USB ports are standard, along with HD radio and a five-speaker sound system. If you want a bit more screen space, you can upgrade to a 10.3-inch central color display. Other options include a Burmester surround-sound audio system and an integrated navigation system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-class hasn't yet been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named it an IIHS Top Safety Pick +, earning a top score of Good in all crashworthiness measures. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency braking. Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Available adaptive cruise control.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage. The Mercedes-Benz C-class provides a warranty that's on par with the coverage offered by many of its rivals. Keep in mind, though, that you'll get longer warranty protection with the Genesis G70. Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles. Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles. No complimentary scheduled maintenance.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance. With all C300 and C300 4Matic models, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, and it generates 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. A nine-speed automatic transmission performs gearshifting duties. Rear-wheel drive is standard; trims with 4Matic in their monikers come with all-wheel drive. The engine gets this Mercedes off the line without delay. In our testing of a rear-drive coupe, it motivated the C300 from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. It's appropriately muted at idle and at highway speeds, but its soundtrack at full throttle is less pleasing than you'd expect. The powerplant puts the C-class sedan on par with the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T in quickness and a tad behind the Audi A4. The transmission complements the engine nicely, providing intuitive shifts.

The C-Class line starts with the 255-horsepower C300, available in coupe, convertible, and sedan forms, with rear- or all-wheel drive. For most buyers, a C300 is plenty of car, with excellent acceleration, slick responses from its 9-speed automatic transmission, and wonderful chassis tuning. The C43 uses a 385-hp twin-turbo V-6, enough to convince most drivers and passengers that it’s a proper AMG. Better yet is the C63, with more than 500 hp hurtled to the ground in S trim. The C63 is for proper hooligans, and we love nearly everything about it.

Performance is a good reason to buy the C-Class, but styling is a close second. The sedans channel vintage Benz lines while tying in the larger E- and S-Class models. Coupes have their own rear ends, and convertibles look as good with their tops up as down. Inside, every version has a gorgeous dash with wide panels of wood trim and a big 10.3-inch screen teamed with a control knob in the center console. A digital instrument cluster is optional.

Safety is a C-Class asset thanks to good scores and accessible advanced crash-avoidance tech that can also reduce driver fatigue on trips and in traffic by handling some duties on its own. That tech mostly makes up for an infotainment system that can be a bear to operate. Optional equipment can send prices through the roof, but every C-Class feels worth the money. Fuel economy isn’t bad, either, which helps lessen the blow. A C300 can easily hit 35 mpg on the highway in real-world driving.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG. The most fuel-efficient choice in the C-class lineup is the rear-drive C300 sedan, and the EPA estimates its fuel economy at 24/35 mpg city/highway. Rivals such as the BMW 3-series offer better fuel economy (up to 26/36 mpg). The C300 4Matic sedan is rated at 23/33 mpg by the EPA. A rear-drive C300 coupe we tested achieved real-world fuel economy of 33 mpg on the highway, 2 mpg better than its EPA rating.
