The Eletre doesn't quite jibe with Lotus's famed sports cars but offers a performance all its own, requiring a paradigm shift for enthusiast drivers. Eye-catching design, luxury interior, impressive driving range in base and S trims. With a new model that is completely different from any Lotus that has come before it, the British firm best known for producing lightweight, high-performance sports cars in small quantities is departing from this long-standing marketing approach. Before the end of 2024, the new Eletre, a high-performance electric SUV manufactured in China, will be available for purchase in the United States. The Eletre's enormous battery pack makes it significantly heavier than any other Lotus vehicle, but its electric motors, which generate at least 603 horsepower, nonetheless provide powerful acceleration. Lotus wants to compete with other electric SUV models, such as the BMW iX and Audi e-tron, but the Eletre looks a lot like the stunning Lamborghini Urus.

The Eletre is the company's first SUV and a completely new addition to the Lotus lineup. The price of the 2025 Lotus Eletre starts at $107,000 and goes up to $229,900 depending on the trim and options. Eletre $107,000. R $145,000. Carbon $229,900. If you want maximum performance, the Eletre R is the choice as it provides up to 905 horsepower. For 2025, it's also the only model available. Later, a base model and a mid-range S trim will become available; both will have fewer horsepower but longer driving range. 

The Eletre's base powertrain is a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup making 603 horsepower. It appears to be a fast and comfortable performance SUV, but it lacks the agility of Lotus' sports vehicles. With a staggering 905 horsepower, the top-spec R is the only one offered for the 2025 model year. When we pressed the throttle pedal aggressively, that model exhibited unsettling squirms and twitches, and it is far more dramatic on the road. We will add more driving impressions and test findings to this post whenever we are able to test the Eletre domestically. We believe the 603-hp Eletre can reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds after a test drive. For the most potent R trim, we predict a zero-to-60-mph time of under 2.7 seconds.

Base and S models should have a driving range of roughly 315 miles with a 109.0-kWh battery pack. The high-performance Eletre R should have a range of about 260 miles between charges, but it will not be as good. The crew will test the Eletre's capabilities by putting it through a real-world 75 mph highway fuel economy and driving range test after we receive it. We have not gotten a chance to test the electric SUV for ourselves, and the EPA has not yet provided fuel efficiency estimates for the Eletre. We will try it out on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route once we have it, and we will update this story with the findings. for additional details regarding the fuel efficiency of the Eletre.

Whether it's as engaging in its accelerative abilities as a comparitively endowed Lamborghini Urus or Porsche Cayenne is less certain. Impressive, no doubt – incongruous, even, at times – but shorn of the screaming soundtrack of a twin-turbo V8, it feels more brutally effective than hedonistic.

A large 15.1-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard and will run a version of parent company Geely's ECARX infotainment system that's shared with the Smart #1 SUV that's not sold in America. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard; a head-up display is available as is an upgraded audio system with 23 speakers and 1500 watts. The Eletre will be available as a five-seater with a three-place rear bench or a four-seater with two separate buckets in the back. Interesting materials including wool-blend cloth, stitched leather, microfiber, and milled bronze accents can be found in its cabin. Overall, considering Lotus's typical minimalist, lightweight interiors, the inside is surprisingly luxurious. The switchgear is made of metal with knurled detailing that would look perfectly at home in a Bentley, and the sport seats are cozy for long-distance driving.

The first impression is of an attention to detail and quality that is surely the measure of anything with a three-pointed star or quartet of rings on its snout. It’s minimalist, sure, but the switchgear is so satisfyingly, authentically tactile and the soft furnishings so decadently upholstered as to cement the Eletre’s standing as a full-blown luxury proposition. The steering wheel, although gratuitously 'squircular' in a bid to push the Eletre's sporting credentials, is gratifyingly chunky and the controls hosted upon it sensibly arranged. There are enjoyably weighty paddles behind it for adjusting the regenerative braking and drive mode and plenty of reach and rake adjustment in the column. Conventional buttons and switches are otherwise in short supply, naturally, but there’s a nice clunky weight to the window switches and column stalks, and they are all about where they should be.

Lotus claims that the Eletre will be capable of driving in a semi-autonomous mode thanks to several LIDAR sensors that are mounted on the roof and front wheel arches. The sensors rise out of the bodywork and retract when they're not in use. But the company has not yet detailed which driver-assistance features will be standard and which will be optional. Key safety features will likely include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Available adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature.

Lotus doesn't provide spectacular coverage compared with other auto manufacturers. While its limited warranty aligns with many competitors, both its short powertrain plan and lack of complimentary maintenance are disappointing. Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles.
