The 2026 Tesla Model X remains a popular EV thanks to its spacious cabin, excellent driving range and potent powertrains. Its appeal is marred by inconsistent interior build quality, an occasionally firm ride and some infotainment system quirks. Ferociously quick yet still capable of delivering 300-plus miles of range, the Model X delivers the genuine Tesla experience in an SUV wrapper. Faster than it needs to be, impressive range, widespread Supercharger network makes for stress-free charging. Delivering the speed, range, and left-of-center design and tech choices that define the brand in a three-row SUV is the explicit goal of the Model X, the largest SUV in the current Tesla lineup. This includes a futuristic design with real gull-wing doors, a choice of two AWD powertrains, and a significant dependence on the touchscreen for the majority of operating operations rather than conventional knobs and buttons. It is also very fast; in an older, less potent version, our test drivers completed the 60-mph sprint in 3.3 seconds. The interior fit and finish are less stunning; they seem a bit out of place for a car that starts at over $90,000. The Model X, which was revolutionary when it first came out ten years ago, is still amazing but is getting old.

According to Tesla, the 2026 Model X has better ride quality because to new suspension bushings. In an attempt to create a quieter interior atmosphere, Tesla says it has expanded the area for the third row and added active noise cancellation and more sound-damping materials. The Plaid model with its three electric motors is sure to deliver insane acceleration, but that added performance is mighty expensive. And its 335-mile estimated driving range isn't as good as the less expensive All-Wheel Drive model’s estimate, so we'd save the cash. The Model X All-Wheel Drive offers up to 352 miles of estimated driving range and is still mighty quick.

Two electric motors, one at the front axle and one at the back, are standard on the base Model X. These motors allow for all-wheel drive and are said to provide 670 horsepower in total. The high-performance Plaid model with 1020 horsepower features two motors at the back and one up front. Although the X has good handling, it is still a large, hefty SUV with the entertaining party trick of rapid acceleration thanks to its electric motors. Even an older, less powerful model easily exceeded Tesla's claimed 60-mph record of 3.8 seconds in our tests, with a 3.3-second run. The X's base setup is more than quick. We have not yet confirmed the tri-motor Plaid variant's acceleration times at our test track, but it claims to reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. The Model S Plaid sedan, which shares the same fundamental foundation as the Model X, achieved a heart-stopping 2.1-second 60-mph time in our test. The Model X is rated for up to 5000 pounds, although it would not rank in our top ten list of the best cars for towing.

The All-Wheel Drive model comes with an EPA-estimated driving range of 352 miles, a 23-mile increase over 2025. The faster Plaid model drops the estimated driving range to 335 miles, a 21-mile increase over the previous model. As to recharging, it’s quick via one of Tesla's Superchargers, which are available across the country. Charging at home via a 240-volt or 120-volt connection will be slower, but probably more convenient for owners, so Tesla offers in-home charging equipment for purchase. The EPA hasn't released MPGe estimates for the 2026 Model X yet, but the 2025 Model X All-Wheel Drive returned 104 MPGe city and 96 MPGe highway. Even the Plaid model, which sacrifices some efficiency for its massive increase in power, outperformed key rivals in this metric. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. 

A huge touchscreen infotainment system dominates the dashboard and controls nearly all of the Model X's various features and settings. A secondary digital readout directly in front of the driver serves as the gauge cluster. Tesla's infotainment system is certainly high-tech, but you won't find Apple CarPlay or Android Auto capability in it. Rear-seat riders are treated to their own small display, which provides entertainment and some control over the car's features. Love it or hate it, a stark and nearly buttonless interior design is classic Tesla. In place of the traditional circular steering wheel, the driver is confronted with a digital gauge display and a distinctive rectangular yoke-style steering controller, which is frequently annoying to use and challenging, if not impossible, to get used to. At least there is the free option of a standard steering wheel. The Model X's windshield and glass roof combination, which extends smoothly from the base of the hood up and over the front-seat occupants for an almost unbroken view of the sky and the road ahead, is another distinctive feature. Even with these cutting-edge amenities, the Model X's cabin falls short, especially given that it costs close to six figures, which is the Plaid's pricing range. The seats are somewhat flat, the cabin is unimpressive, and we have observed misaligned panels and other build-quality problems.

Tesla's Autopilot technology is standard in the Model X, and Full Self-Driving is an optional feature. In order to help steer, accelerate, and brake the Model X, Tesla's driver-assist modes use many cameras to identify objects, people, and other cars. However, despite their names, these systems do not operate entirely on their own; the driver must always maintain control. Additionally, the Model X has a Summon feature that lets the user stand outside and park or retrieve the SUV from confined spaces.
