That is effectively Chevy's pitch for the 2023 Corvette Z06 and its unique LT6 V-8, albeit we may be paraphrasing a little. Both GM and us find it hard to believe that General Motors actually manufactured this.
A modified version of Chevrolet's supercharged 6.2-liter V-8, which produced up to 755 horsepower in the previous-generation Corvette, could have been used to power the new Z06. The simple and sensible course of action would have been to do that. Instead, they began from scratch with a 5.5-liter screamer that is naturally aspirated, has 32 valves, a flat-plane crankshaft, and is naturally aspirated. The LT6 produces 460 pound-feet of torque at 6300 rpm, or about the redline in a standard Stingray, and 670 horsepower naturally at a heady 8400 rpm.
The Suzuki Hayabusas might be parked at a stoplight or a pit stall at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, but from the moment the engine screams to life, it sounds impatient. The muffler valves on the Z06's pushrod LT2 V-8 may continuously change in two-degree increments, fine-tuning the sound, as opposed to the pushrod LT2 V-8's bimodal muffler valves, which can only be set to either loud or silent. It sounds like a Ferrari 458 Italia that has entered puberty when it is wide open. Our test vehicle has larger, $1,495 optional carbon-ceramic brakes that are completely unbeatable on a racetrack. These brakes measure 15.7 inches up front and 15.4 inches back. It's simple to forget you're driving a hardcore track fanatic with a car that can turn unapologetically sociopathic with a few settings changes when the top is down, Gordon Lightfoot is playing softly, and the seat heaters are on during a crisp fall evening.
The Z06 reevaluates your expectations. While 8500 rpm initially seems absurd, you soon find yourself reaching the 8600 rpm rev limitation since it pulls strongly all the way there (the LT6 feels like it would be happy to visit the far side of 10,000 rpm, were it not for warranty considerations). When the lateral stick turns out to have limits and the front and back ends start dancing to see who would let go of grip first, it almost takes you by surprise. It seems as though the sixth-generation Z06's high-winding spirit is being captured by the Z06, but with considerably more elegance. This is the model of Ferrari that is no longer produced.
In comparison to its Bowling Green siblings, it is priced similarly. The basic price of this convertible is $116,795, and adding options raised it to $162,510. If you want to investigate the health benefits of carbon-fiber wheels or treat yourself to the entire Z07 Performance package, the ceiling is higher. But who are the rivals? The closest equivalent is probably an Audi R8 Spyder, which is more expensive and has about 100 fewer horsepower.
