The XT6 has not altered significantly since the last time I drove the 2020 model. The SUV is as attractive as ever, featuring the automaker's characteristic angular design and vertical LED light signatures at each end. Updates for the 2023 model year include new metallic paint colors in Latte and Rosewood, available 21-inch wheels for the sportier Sport trim, and Brembo brakes with red calipers as standard equipment for that specification. This Premium Luxury variant features none of the aforementioned modifications, but is notable as the sweet spot in the XT6 series.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine powers the base XT6 Luxury. Its 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque are adequate, but for this 198.8-inch-long, three-row SUV, I'd recommend going with the Premium Luxury model and its more torquey V6 engine.

In this application, the 3.6-liter LGX V6 engine shared with other GM SUVs such as the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Blazer generates 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. It has good passing power and operates smoothly and quietly in the city and on the highway. It's nothing to write home about, but the V6 is similarly unremarkable, which is OK for a comfort-oriented SUV like this one.

Both engines come standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, while on-demand all-wheel drive and torque-vectoring Sport Control AWD are available for the Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport trims, respectively. A driving mode selector allows the XT6's performance to be adjusted for various situations, including Sport, Snow/Ice, and, for AWD versions, Off-Road mode, but I don't believe most drivers will ever need to switch from the Touring mode.

The EPA estimates that the V6 will achieve 21 mpg combined on ordinary gas, with 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for front-wheel drive and 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for all-wheel drive. The more fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine is rated at 23 mpg combined (21 city and 27 highway for FWD or AWD, respectively), but premium fuel is more expensive. Consequently, according to the EPA's cost computation tools, the I4 is more costly to operate annually than the V6.

Cadillac's most advanced driver-assistance system is now available on the 2023 XT6, with a catch. The new $2,500 Super Cruise system is still the first version of the hands-free highway steering help and does not feature the latest Super Cruise 2.0 technology capable of autonomous lane changes or hands-free towing, as seen on the new Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Silverado. Also, the XT6 will not receive the newly announced update for use on undivided highways.

This is rather disappointing, but Super Cruise 1.0 is still a highly significant technological advancement. On the more than 200,000 kilometers of North American highways that GM has laser-scanned, Super Cruise can be triggered to give automated steering, braking, and accelerating to a predetermined pace, keeping the SUV in its lane while the driver relaxes hands-free. Level 2 driver-assistance technology requires the driver's attention, therefore an infrared camera mounted on the steering column ensures that the driver's eyes remain on the road. If you look away for too long, the XT6 will remind you to pay attention, first by flashing red lights on the steering wheel and then by emitting aural alerts, before returning control to the driver.

Super Cruise functions as effectively as it did when it debuted in 2018 on the CT6 sedan, comfortably navigating curved highway parts and responding to traffic changes. However, the larger XT6 appears to crowd the left edge of the lane, making it difficult to feel fully at ease in circumstances of heavy traffic where the technology would be most effective. Although the lanes in my area are somewhat tight, I would love it if a future edition of Super Cruise allowed me to adjust or reduce the lane-keeping gaps on each side.

The 2023 XT6 is equipped with a sophisticated range of driver-assistance technology; nevertheless, many of the greatest capabilities are grouped into optional packages. The SUV is equipped with standard forward-collision mitigation with pedestrian recognition and a following distance indicator to minimize unintended tailgating. The $1,300 Driver Assist option includes more robust automatic front emergency braking, reverse braking assistance, and automatic seat belt tightening. Upgrade to the $2,350 Technology option for the addition of a surround-view camera system with onboard digital video recording, rear pedestrian recognition, automated parking assist, and a rear camera mirror.

This technology option also replaces the basic 8-inch touchscreen Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment with an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and adds onboard navigation to the regular 8-inch touchscreen. CUE is essentially a rebranding of the superb GM Infotainment 3 software, including a smartphone-like icon-based interface with a simple, intuitive learning curve. The system utilizes OnStar LTE Services for features such as connected destination search, integration with onboard apps such as Spotify or Amazon Alexa, and user profile synchronization between vehicles, which functions optimally when the data subscription is maintained after the initial trial period.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard with wireless connectivity for drivers who choose to stream their apps from a smartphone, and a snugly integrated wireless phone charger keeps the device charged while on the road.

The XT6 is a peaceful and comfortable cruiser with a comprehensive array of standard cabin technologies and available driver assistance features. However, when compared to the formidable competitors in this price category, such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, and Acura MDX, it feels like a middle-of-the-road performer, with each of the aforementioned vehicles offering a superior overall driving experience.

However, the advent of Super Cruise this year considerably alters the situation. Even without the most advanced technology, the Caddy is the only car in its class that allows hands-free driving at high speeds. This makes the 2023 Cadillac XT6 at least one of the class's most intriguing automobiles.
