Subcompact SUVs satisfy a desire for room, affordability, and a sense of belonging, given that nearly everyone drives an SUV today. The Volkswagen Taos, among twenty other competitors, satisfies an additional, more contemporary consumer desire for economical fuel economy. Every Taos, whether equipped with front- or all-wheel drive, achieves exceptional real-world fuel economy because to its frugal 158-hp, 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. We recommend the larger Tiguan SUV for towing, as the Taos lacks a tow hook, but the Taos has ample cargo room, even with the rear seats occupied, to do grocery shopping with ease. The Tiguan's low starting price and roomy cabin make it an enticing alternative to vehicles such as the Kia Seltos and Chevrolet Trailblazer, which are among the best in its class. During our 200-mile, 75-mph highway fuel-economy test loop, an all-wheel-drive Taos SEL achieved 40 mpg, 4 mpg better than the EPA's estimate. Comparatively to the Volkswagen, the Mazda CX-30's more luxuriously furnished cabin feels like a little mansion due to the Volkswagen's extensive use of inside plastics.

What's Different in 2023? Volkswagen's smallest crossover undergoes little changes for 2023, although it does receive some equipment upgrades. Volkswagen includes as standard equipment driver assistance technologies such as forward collision warning with automated emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring, blind spot monitor, and rear traffic alert. All-wheel-drive S variants have 18-inch wheels instead of 17-inch wheels. SEL models are now equipped with a panoramic sunroof as standard equipment. Pricing and Purchasing Decisions: S $25,450. SE $30,220. SEL $35,830.

We propose the SE model because it is the most cost-effective option. It includes 18-inch wheels, blind-spot monitoring, heated front seats, remote start, and wireless charging as standard equipment. We would add all-wheel drive for an additional $1450 because it replaces the rear suspension of the front-drive model with a more advanced independent unit. We would also choose the IQ. The Drive and SE Convenience options include adaptive cruise control, automatic high lights, a heated steering wheel, lane-keeping assist, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance are considered. The Taos is powered by Volkswagen's new 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It generates 158 horsepower and 184 lbft of torque. Front-wheel-drive variants are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while all-wheel-drive models are equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The rear suspensions of the front- and all-wheel-drive Taos are likewise distinct, with the former employing a torsion-beam configuration and the latter a more complex multilink design. During our testing, the difference in acceleration between the two drivetrains was minor, with the front-wheel-drive Taos outaccelerating the 4Motion to 60 miles per hour by less than a tenth of a second. Standard wheels are 17 inches in diameter, although 18- and 19-inch wheels are also available. During our time with one, we admired the engine's low-speed torque, the eight-speed automatic's subtle operation, and the suspension's calm on uneven roads.

Economy of Fuel and Real-World MPG The front-wheel-drive Taos is rated at 28 city mpg and 36 highway mpg, while the all-wheel-drive model is rated at 25 city mpg and 32 highway mpg. The front-wheel-drive Taos obtained an excellent 40 mpg on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route, while the 4Motion all-wheel-drive Taos achieved 33 mpg. For more information regarding the Taos's fuel economy, see the EPA's website.

The interior, the comfort, and the cargo space. Inside the Taos, there is nothing particularly exceptional. The design and materials resemble the current style of other Volkswagen vehicles. Every dashboard features a completely digital instrument cluster, and standard two-tone seats are upholstered in fabric. Additionally, leatherette and leather upholstery are available. There is also an abundance of popular options. Customizable ambient lighting, an eight-way power driver's seat, dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof are available for the Taos cabin. The Taos has 37.9 inches of rear-seat legroom, which is only 0.8 inches less than the Tiguan with two rows. In addition, the Taos features 28 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seatbacks and 66 cubic feet when they are folded down.

The Taos can maximize interior space due to its size and design. Behind the back seats of the Taos is a class-leading 27.9 cubic feet of load space. The rear seats have a center pass-through and a standard 60/40 split, and they fold almost completely flat, leaving a 2-inch height difference with the cargo floor. The release levers are located on the seats, but are within reach when standing at the rear hatch.

Good storage options exist in the passenger area of the cabin. The front door pockets are spacious, the cupholders have an anti-tip design to keep your beverages upright, and the cubby beneath the center armrest provides depth to compensate for its shorter length. Because the Taos is one of the largest vehicles in its class, there is greater space for car seats. We also liked the tiny details, such as the sleeker-looking car seat anchor covers and the well-positioned top tether anchors for quick access. This is one of the most family-friendly solutions in the category.

Informational entertainment and connectivity. Every Taos has an infotainment system with a Wi-Fi hotspot that requires a subscription. A 6.5-inch touchscreen is standard, while an 8-inch touchscreen is available as an upgrade. Additionally, the system is available with built-in navigation, a BeatsAudio audio with eight speakers, SiriusXM satellite radio, and wireless smartphone charging.

Some of the most recent VW touch-sensitive controls were omitted from the Taos. What did make the cut is a bass-heavy Beats sound system that we found uncomfortable for regular usage (in a good way). Our higher grade vehicle also had a slightly sluggish but user-friendly navigation system. We appreciate that the map can also be shown in the center of the driver's instrument cluster. Our vehicle was equipped with three USB-C ports, a wireless charger, and a 12-volt power outlet. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connection via USB is standard, and wireless connectivity becomes available beginning with the SE trim level. In our testing, we discovered that the transmission's clumsy shift points impeded the adaptive cruise control system at lower speeds.

Ultimately, value is in the eye of the beholder, but the Taos appears reasonably priced for what you receive. Its entry-level price is quite cheap, but the higher trim levels lack a number of desirable amenities. Our SEL test vehicle came in at just under $35,000, which is on the higher end of this SUV segment, but it also offers one of the more comprehensive packages. There are clearly some cheap-feeling interior components in the Taos, but Volkswagen invested heavily in the more commonly handled places. Four years/50,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage and seven years/100,000 miles of rust-through coverage are standard for this segment. Volkswagen provides free planned maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles and three years or 36,000 miles of roadside assistance.

Features for Safety and Driver Assistance. The smallest VW crossover is also available with a range of driver-assistance features, including as forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites for more information about the Taos' crash-test results. Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are key safety features. Forward collision warning and automated emergency braking are standard. Default rear traffic alert

Maintenance and Warranty Coverage Volkswagen offers a longer-than-average limited warranty and a shorter-than-average powertrain warranty. However, complimentary planned maintenance in accordance with Toyota is included. The limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The warranty on the powertrain covers four years or 50,000 miles. For two years or 20,000 miles, complimentary regular maintenance is included.
