The 2023 Mercedes-AMG E63 S is the final entry in the Book of Boosted V8s for the hot-rod division. The high-performance E-class sedan will likely adopt a hybrid drivetrain for the 2024 model year, similar to the AMG C63. Those interested in purchasing an AMG E63 or placing a factory order are undoubtedly aware that dealers were unable to fulfill orders for 2022 models after halting sales of the majority of V-8-powered vehicles in the United States. The business has announced that it will resume sales in 2023, which is good news because the E63 S is a lovely car, with its twin-turbo V8 producing 603 roaring horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, and its multi-clutch nine-speed transmission transferring this power to all four wheels. The super saloon has the guts to compete with the majority of today's super sedans, but it is capable of much more than just a rocket. The exquisitely opulent cabin may be a tranquil environment for the driver and passengers, and its air suspension can provide a plush ride at the flip of a mode switch. If we had the funds, we would purchase one of the 999 Final Edition models. We do not yet know which possible options will be included in the Final Edition or how much it would increase the price, but our preferred configuration would contain extra-cost items that enhance the AMG E63's opulent character. For instance, the Exterior Lighting kit offers automated high beams and headlights that maximize illumination even around bends. The Warmth and Comfort and Acoustic Comfort packages are also appealing. Together, they offer a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, rapid-heating elements to the front seats, and extra sound-deadening materials that contribute to a library-like interior. The three-zone automated climate control, heated rear seats, head-up display, massaging front seats, and soft-close doors are our favorite individual extras.

Powertrain, Engine, and Performance The enormous twin-turbo 603-hp V-8 engine of the E63 S is both a gentlemanly companion and a monstrous beast. The engine and nine-speed automatic transmission respond calmly and smoothly when left in Comfort mode. When one of the sportier drive settings is selected, the powerplant unleashes unrelenting rage. The gearshifts are lightning-quick, and the engine's 627 pound-feet of torque rips the tires to shreds. In our tests, the E63 S accelerated to 60 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 11.1. Despite being equipped with two turbochargers, the 4.0-liter V-8 sounds nearly as good as AMG's normally aspirated V-8 engines of yesteryear, and it will be sorely missed. The AMG's steering is well-weighted and highly communicative, enhancing the excitement. While not as compliant as the standard E-class, the default setting of the E63's suspension makes daily driving a distinct possibility. Toggle the springs to the Sport or Sport+ level, however, and the E63 has the potential to shake out your tooth fillings. However, as part of the 2021 model year redesign, the suspension was eased in response to consumer input. However, the AMG E63 still appreciates being pushed to its limits and rewards drivers who have sufficient audacity to do so.

Considering the mind-blowing performance of the E63 S, the Mercedes-AMG is remarkably fuel efficient. However, this does not imply that it is an economical fuel consumer. It obtained an EPA-estimated rating of 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for the 2021 model year. We anticipate the super sedan to receive the same ratings for the 2023 model year, as the same supercharged V8 will remain under the hood for one more year. This is only one less than the Porsche, which is officially a hatchback and has a somewhat larger trunk.

Mercedes is not alone in attempting to include maximum functionality into its automobiles, but it is among the worst offenders in terms of complexity. At least Mercedes looks to have invested in the lower-half controls. Used to be inexpensive, weak, and creaky when pressed, these adjustable mini-screens controlled the dynamic systems (suspension, exhaust, traction, gears, etc.). They are now more substantial. Bravo. The left and right screens are controlled via the respective thumb pads on the top bar. It's a decent notion that you don't have to use the touchpad on the center console or poke at the screens directly, but it's still not a quick or simple method to navigate the more complex menu system. Neither is the "Hey Mercedes" voice-command system.

Consider some good aspects. The driving posture is excellent, the seats, while being somewhat firm, are really supportive, and there is plenty space for passengers and their belongings. The estate's trunk is enormous; it's a really useful device, and while its interior may not be as intuitive to operate as its Audi and BMW rivals', the cabin is more inviting than a typical executive sedan's.

Infotainment and Connectivity: The upper dashboard is dominated by a pair of 12.3-inch screens, one for the digital gauge cluster and the other for the infotainment system. The interface is controlled via the brand's omnipresent console-mounted control knob, with a touchpad on top that allows users to input commands by swiping their fingers and provides some additional functionality. Unfortunately, the touchpad was difficult to use and easy to accidently brush. Using a pair of touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, the driver can also interact with the two displays. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connection, a Burmester music system, and wireless phone charging are standard features.

The AMG E63 S sedan has not been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for safety and driver assistance systems (IIHS). We are also dissatisfied that Mercedes charges extra for the majority of driver-assist technologies. Standard front collision warning and automatic emergency braking are vital safety features. Adaptive cruise control includes lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, if equipped.
